If seen as a journey, a journey of life, The Millionaire is an extraordinary tale. Set in a Bombay / Mumbai beautiful at times but mostly portrayed in its suburbs and slums, the film tells the story of Jamal , his life, his love and his attempt to become a millionaire by participating in a quiz. The story moves on sequences between present, past, recent and old memories, indelible in the mind of the protagonist. " What the hell knows who is a beggar from the slums? . From the start it is clear that the answers, seemingly impossible, Jamal did not provide nor its culture, or its preparation, but life itself, through a series of key episodes (sometimes dramatic, sometimes violent and sometimes funny and surreal) that remain etched in his memory and in a few details that make a difference in his life.
The Millionaire turns out to be an overview of all the emotions, especially love, that take shape in Jamal young boy, when he and his brother Salim , assists the death of his mother and the destruction of shanty towns in which they live. E 'at this point that the two embark on their journey. And it is here that they met Latika .
The contrast between the two brothers in the way of approaching a condition of their lives seems a perfect expression, a metaphor about the different ways that exist in understanding life and the different ability to seize the opportunity and the signs of destiny.
Jamal is a young boy immediately lively and creative, able to gain a form of human knowledge The distinctive (which is very well made by his confrontation with the presenter of the quiz), but what is most striking the protagonist, is his perception of his love for Latika, who will support him to chase and search for life: first the naive and tender love of a child, then that becomes intense and compelling force, energy and determination , so as to bring it to become a millionaire groped through the quiz, even if the money and fame are not what he aspires to.
In perfect contrast is the figure of Salim, which directly or indirectly, will be increasingly crucial part of the fate of his brother. Since small Salim seems more ready to "grow up quickly" in a reality to the limit, but its sometimes be more mischievous, sometimes more a childhood marked by difficult, will lead to a feeling of anger against life and violence as a manifestation of a desire for wealth and power.
Within this juxtaposition of roles and destinies, is beautiful encounter between the protagonist and a young man, blinded and forced to beg, that Jamal had met as a child along the path of life: "You Jamal grown. Well, I'm happy for you. You are able to escape. Have you saved. Instead I have had no luck. This is the difference .
and beautiful traits of love appear in the film, painting, fairy tales and perceived intensity expressed in the dialogues between Jamal and Latika in He promises, in its constant and relentless search for her and the sacrifice of Latika.
" was written."
With The Millionaire ( winner of 4 Golden Globes and Oscars 8, including Best Picture and best director), Danny Boyle (made famous by the film Trainspotting) shows a great versatility and a remarkable ability to engage in very diverse cinematic experiences, discussing (albeit with mixed results) with genres, textures and subjects are completely different. Is very suitable for the style of its director, through a series of flashbacks that make it enjoyable and smooth vision of the film, as much guessed is the choice of music and fine photography, especially when applied to the joints and raids between poverty and the misery of the slums of Bombay / Mumbai.
